August 29th, 2023, Our Graduate Student Elisa Olivas receives the 2023 SocalHub Fellowship! Congratulations Elisa and well-deserved! Elisa Olivas will be working under the supervision of John Watt and Stephen David at Los Alamos National Lab at the center for integrated nanotechnologies. Using Enzyme metal organic Frameworks, John and Elisa will develop protocols for for CryoTEM, EELS, EFTEM, and tomography to understand the nucleation and growth mechanisms.


August 17th-August 20th, 2023, Nehal Idris visits the SLAC National Lab at Stanford this Summer and conduct SAXS measurements there, good work Nehal! She met with our Alumni Dr. Paul Hurst who is now a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University!

The Beckman Scholarship is a program in which undergraduate students receives $21,000 over 15 months, while doing research under an approved mentor program. October 20, 2021 - Paul received the Allergan Graduate Fellowship in Organic Chemistry. The
Allergan Foundation has provided funding for this fellowship to allow UCI Chemistry
graduate students to purse focused research in a variety of sub-disciplines of cutting
edge chemical synthesis. Congrats Paul!


October 15, 2022 - Aoon and Rain visited and spent time at the Advanced Light Source facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. What a cool experience!

July 26 - 29, 2021 - Paul presented his work on ring-opening polymerization-induced crystallization-driven self-assembly (ROPI-CDSA) at the virtual National Graduate Research Polymer Conference 2021 (NGRPC).


July 14 ,2021 - Aoon was awarded the Rowland fellowship for his proposed research to create "Living polymer composites from block copolymer coacervates" in collaboration with Prof. Seu Sim. Congrats Aoon! (https://www.chem.uci.edu/rowland-fellows)


June 7, 2021 - Wyeth’s paper titled “Liquid Phase Electron Microscopy Provides Opportunities in Polymer Synthesis and Manufacturing” was selected as an ACS editor’s choice article. Great job Wyeth!!


March 2021: Alana accepts an Assistant Professor position in Analytical Chemistry for the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto-Mississauga. Congrats, Alana!


March 16, 2021 - Patterson lab, in collaboration with the Martin lab and Corona Public Library, delivered 100 remote science kits to the Public Library to be distributed to library patrons! Videos made by lab members of the two labs are hosted on YouTube that offer step by step instructions and explanations of the science contained in the biology and physics themed kits.

Feb 24, 2021 -Aoon, Brooke, and Urja organized an outreach event with SISTERS (Success in Science & Technology: Engagement with Role-Models), an organization dedicated to inspiring girls to pursue an education and career in STEM. The SISTERs program is affiliated with the College of Natural Sciences at UC Riverside and is run by undergraduate students passionate about STEM. SISTERs accomplishes this by connecting girls to successful women in STEM and introducing them to different careers in STEM. The Patterson Lab previously partnered with SISTERs in a virtual event last year and was invited to host another event this year. This year, Aoon and Brooke talked with students about why they decided to pursue a Ph.D., their education pathway, their hobbies, their plans after completing their doctorate program, as well as their current research. Additionally, we gave the students a virtual tour of our lab and described the types of chemistry we do. We hope to inspire these students to pursue a career in chemistry!

Nov 10, 2020 - We are happy to announce the formation of the MSA Focused Interest Group (FIG) on EM Data Analysis and Management (EM-DAM) founded by Patterson lab member Dr. Alex Rakowski. EM-DAM will broadly focus on 1) the successes, opportunities, and challenges of applying novel algorithms and processing and storage strategies and 2) be a hub for the transfer of knowledge in applying these techniques. EM-DAM hopes to maximize the opportunities that new microscope and computer technologies allow. EM-DAM will begin to conduct meetings in 2021.
